Welcome to Walled Garden

In 2011, custodians James & Lorraine Small, along with a dedicated team of enthusiastic gardeners & volunteers, began the cultivation of the garden

Our vision is to bring the garden into full production using sustainable, horticultural practices, adhering to organic, growing principles. This is being done with a responsibility to increase biodiversity and reduce our environmental impact.

In recent years, the Walled Garden has transformed into a fine working Victorian kitchen garden producing seasonal organic fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers throughout the year. It has become a hub for a variety of events closely connected to nature, horticulture, seasonal food and traditional arts & crafts.

The journey doesn’t end here, as we are currently immersed in an ambitious and sympathetic restoration program. This encompasses the restoration of the walls, pathways, gates, the old steel glasshouse, the gardeners’ cottages and stables, along with the adjacent property, Old Mill House—a 19th-century mill manager’s residence.

While the completion of this project will take a few years, our inspiration and motivation stems from the incredible potential of this unique, heritage space.

We are dedicated to preserving its historical charm and enhancing its sustainability for the enjoyment of generations to come.

"The Walled Garden in Helens Bay is awe inspiring! The vision for the future, for education and regeneration, the love , energy and hard work taking place here is just amazing! Without Lorraine and James this garden would be left to wither and decay and a loss of an important piece of history in Helens Bay."
